Kaw Valley's Place to Network with Colleagues

Welcome to our collaborative wiki for our district's teachers and staff.  Our teaching assignments may be spread over a 64 square mile area, but with this Web 2.0 tool, we can bridge the physical distances and share knowledge, resources, and ideas with each other on a regular basis!  We know Kaw Valley has many incredibly resourceful teachers, and we offer this venue for your use so you can share your knowledge and expertise with the rest of our district (without having to make a presentation at an inservice or collaboration day)!

Questions you may have:

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a website that allows you to not only read what is posted, but also CONTRIBUTE!  Most likely, the websites you usually access are full of information which you can view, click, and possibly even interact with, but if there are mistakes or incorrect information there is nothing you can do about it.  On a wiki, you can directly post information yourself or edit what's already there just like you would edit or enter information on a word processing document.  The most well-known wiki so far is "Wikipedia."

To view a YouTube video explaining wikis: Click here or take a look at PBWiki's Powerpoint  presentation about this cool Web2.0 tool!

What am I supposed to do?

Initially, we will set the site up as a place to share the valuable teaching and learning resources many of you have already found.  Whenever you find a website that you think would be helpful to other teachers in our district--whether it's by subject matter, grade levels, or teaching strategies and tools--find the wiki page you think is the most logical place to post that specific link and click the edit tab at the top of the page.  Paste the link into the table, write a brief summary in the center column. and list your name and location as the contributor.  Click the Save button near the bottom left corner, and you're done!

If you choose to, you can receive email notifications when our wiki has been edited, so you'll know when to log in and check what's new.  Our hope is that as we become accustomed to this type of collaboration, this wiki will develop to include whatever information you deem helpful!  You'll be free to add pages, links, documents, and other items as you see fit.

How do I find the subject I'm looking for?

There is a section on the right of the screen called the SideBar which has links to all of the pages that are currently in the wiki.  Just click on the link and it will take you to that page.  If you can't see the sidebar, look for a small triangle at the upper right portion of the page (to the right of the View and Edit tabs).  Click on the triangle to show or hide the SideBar.

What if I mess something up?

Not to worry!  We can always revert to a previous page if necessary, but all you are doing is editing or adding information to our knowledge base.  Come and try it out!

What should I know about using a wiki?

Being the civil, caring professionals we are, it's unlikely there will be any problems.  Just follow the normal workplace behavior guidelines that you have for yourself, EXCEPT alway err on the side of politeness!  Remember that in this forum, facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice aren't communicated along with your words!  PB Wiki has provided an etiquette guide for students that might be a helpful place to start.

If you have other questions, please ask them below in the comments area, or you could resort to the "old fashioned" method of emailing one of the administrators!

Thanks for using our wiki!

Check this website for examples of how teachers have used wikis in their classrooms: http://www.publicpbwikis.com/Educational/9-12_High_School/
